Demulsifier Q3 reduces treating and disposal costs of MARPOL oil

Under the MARPOL Convention Annexe I, oil tank washing residues or oil-contaminated water must be treated before being discharged. WVT Industries , a Belgian market leader in industrial cleaning products and solvents, has developed a range of highly efficient demulsifiers for decantation processes . Its new Demulsifier Q3 , separates water in oil and oil in water mixtures – quicker and at a lower cos t than most competing products .

Under 1% water content 

MARPOL oil is a water-in-oil emulsion with its stability depending on the water content, which is typically between 2.4% to 50.8%. Adding the new Demulsifier Q3 to MARPOL-oils significantly speeds up the decantation process and attains fuel with a water content of under 1% . In less than twelve hours , Demulsifier Q3 optimizes the calorific value of the recycled oil, and increases its resell value . To obtain optimum results, the water-in-oil emulsion is heated up to between 80 to 90°C before adding Demulsifier Q3.

Smaller dosages, better resultt

With 3000 ppm Demulsifier Q3, a water content of under 1% is attained in less than 12 hours.

The optimum demulsifier dosage much depends on the specific nature of the oil waste. To determine the exact percentage needed, WVT Industries analyses waste samples in its own laboratory , and offers case-by-case recommendations . Typically, the recommended Demulsifier Q3-dosage varies between 1500 and 4000 ppm to the total amount of the oil-water emulsion. If higher dosages fail, the dosage should even be reduced: lower dosages of 3000 ppm usually improve the demulsification . 

Customer case: 0,42 % water content with 1500 ppm 

After adding the WVT Demulsifier Q3 in dosages of 1500 ppm, the water content in the decanted fuel decreased to 0,42%. The water-in-oil emulsion was heated to 95 °C, before adding Demulsifier Q3. Without changing the variable of temperature, these results were obtained in 12 hours. The customer reported to be happy with the first obtained results, and will continue to optimize all variables.

Reduced processing costs 

Demulsifier Q3 significantly reduces processing costs . It replaces the use of cost burdening centrifuge applications. And it reduces the treatment time to less than twelve hours, so that larger volumes can be treated over a much shorter time period.

An organic liquid formulation of surfactants and dispersants, Demulsifier Q3 stays with the fuel – not with the water phase. The decanted water can be discharged without any detrimental impact on the marine environment. Odour neutraliser reduces downtime
